Team Captain Job Description
Get the Word Out Early to Recruit Cyclists and Volunteers
- Identify yourself as Team Captain.
- Recruit key volunteers such as a Co-Captain.
- Recruit Team Members – a Team Captain who recruits more than 10 team members (who have paid the minimum pledge) will qualify for exclusive Team Captain prizes. It takes just four members to form a team.
- Register your Team (must have at least 4 members) by completing the Team Registration Form (coming soon). NOTE: This form is for Team Captains ONLY to register a Team. This form DOES NOT register ANY rider as a participant in the Valero MS 150.
- Display Valero MS 150 brochures and posters around the office or campus. Cafeterias, break rooms, gyms and other high-traffic areas are great places to display information. Put your name and phone number on the posters so people can contact you to get involved.
- People who prefer not to ride can volunteer. Team volunteers can support your group or assist the National MS Society. Volunteers also can raise donations, which can count towards the team total.
- Get on the agenda of business meetings to discuss the Valero MS 150 and your team’s fund-raising efforts. When executives support your team, other employees will follow.
- Talk to HR for assistance in recruiting efforts and the company’s matching gift program.
- Post Tour information in your company’s employee newsletters.
Set Team Goals for Fund-Raising and Recruitment Efforts
- Set a goal for the number of people you will recruit to ride. If your team is open to non-employees, tell team members that their families and friends are welcome to ride.
- The minimum donation to participate in the Valero MS 150 is $300 per person. Check with your HR Department to see if your company offers a Matching Gift Program.
- Post a progress chart with your fund-raising and recruitment goals in a visible area of the office. Update totals regularly.
Pass Information to Cyclists
- Keep your team excited and informed by providing biweekly or weekly Tour updates. Send e-mails about Recommended Rides, jerseys, safety clinics and more. Samples are available through the National MS Society.
- Maintain an updated roster.
Organize and Coordinate a Sign-Up Day or Kick-Off Party
- Set up a recruitment table in the lobby of your building to make it easy for cyclists and volunteers to sign up.
- Host a kick-off party. Invite anyone interested in finding out more about your team and the fund-raising Tour. A member of the National MS Society is available to discuss the Tour and the importance of helping end MS.
- Organize a team fund-raising event to help surpass your goal.
