Volunteer Job Descriptions

  • Amateur Radio/HAM Operators: Provide communications throughout the ride.
  • Bike Check-In and Check-Out: Check in or check out bikes, organize them by rider numbers and carefully store them in lock-up areas. Moderate lifting required.
  • Bike Loading Team: Pack, load and unload bikes to and from trucks. Moderate to heavy lifting is required for this work-intensive position.
  • Bike Medic: A registered rider who provides medical assistance along the route.
  • Bike Police: A registered rider and certified law enforcement officer who serves the route with safety measurements and directs traffic when needed.
  • Breakpoints: Assist with set-up and take down of route breakpoints. Work breakpoints during the ride.
  • Breakpoint Controllers: Provide cyclist traffic control just inside each Breakpoint as cyclists enter and exit each Breakpoint (physical position not located on highway). Responsibility is to keep the cyclists MOVING forward and NOT TO STOP or DISEMBARK from their bike upon entry. Upon exiting, encourage cyclists to prep for remainder of Tour well within the Breakpoint and NOT to stop at the exit. Qualifications: Must be at least 16 years old, willing to work and able to stand for 4-5 hours at their assigned Breakpoint, attend at least one training session and be a task-oriented volunteer ready for repetitive verbal instructions to cyclists in a firm, but courteous, spirited and encouraging tone.
  • Bus Departure: Load luggage on buses, announce bus departures and answer bus schedule questions from riders.
  • Face Painter: Paint creative pictures on faces at festivity sites, and apply temporary tattoos as required.
  • Finish Line Take Down: Dismantle Finish Line sites in Beeville and Corpus Christi, then load trucks with supplies. Heavy lifting is required.
  • Finish Line Set-Up: Set up Finish Line sites in Beeville and Corpus Christi with supplies and equipment such as tables, tents, fencing, banners, scaffolding and signs. Moderate to heavy lifting may be required.
  • Food Service: Set-up and serve food during the ride, check wristbands and clean-up.
  • Hoopla: Decorate Finish Line sites in Beeville and Corpus Christi, then cheer riders across the Finish Lines.
  • Hydration Station: Serve water and Pickle Juice and mix and serve POWERade. Also help serve fruit and snacks if applicable.
  • Information Booth: Answer questions and distribute materials. Receive and secure Lost and Found items.
  • Luggage Team: Help load, store and retrieve luggage at Start Line, Overnight and Finish Line. Moderate to heavy lifting required.
  • Medical Team: Provide medical assistance at all official sites and on the route. Must be licensed or certified professionals for this position.
  • Motorcycle Marshal: Patrol route to help with rider control. When needed, respond to emergencies and traffic situations.
  • Overnight Set-Up: Set up Overnight site with tables, tents, fencing, banners and signs. Moderate to heavy lifting may be required.
  • Parking/Traffic Team: Direct traffic and cyclists at all official sites. No volunteers will be required nor should attempt to direct traffic from the road or to the road from a parking lot.
  • Ride Marshal: Ride Marshals are registered cyclists, and fundraisers, who act as both Good Will and Safety Ambassadors for the Valero MS 150.
  • Rovers: Assist staff as needed.
  • SAG Drivers: Drive Support and Gear (SAG) vans. Moderate lifting may be required. Provide transportation as needed to riders along the route to the nearest breakpoint.
  • Start Line Set-Up/Take Down: Set up tables, tents, fencing, banners and scaffolding; dismantle and pack supplies. Moderate to heavy lifting required.
  • Supply Truck and Van Drivers: Drive, load and unload trucks and vans carrying supplies, ice and refrigerated items. Moderate to heavy lifting may be required. Drivers with commercial licenses preferred. Must participate in at least one MS-sponsored training session before the event.
  • Volunteer Check-In: Check in volunteers at booth.
  • Shuttle Busses: Manage “bus depot”, helping riders find appropriate transportation to destinations.
